About SAFER Together The Storing Ammunition and Firearms to Enhance Resilience Together (SAFER Together) program lets veterans, first responders, and civilians voluntarily and temporarily store firearms at participating gun shops during a personal crisis — no questions asked, completely confidential. VA Medical Centers, Community Based Outpatient Clinics, and Vet Centers located across Alabama. Vet Centers are community-based counseling centers separate from the VA hospital system — no appointment needed for many services, and combat veterans do not need to enroll in VA healthcare to use them.
Alabama Veterans Resource Center (AVRC)
Brand New in 2026Opened February 18, 2026 — the AVRC is a public-private partnership created by Gov. Kay Ivey and the Alabama Legislature to serve as a one-stop statewide hub for veterans navigating benefits, employment, housing, healthcare, and more. The Montgomery location is the first, with satellite offices planned statewide. An online digital hub is also live at missionforwardal.org.

What Is a Vet Center?VA Vet Centers are community-based readjustment counseling centers offering individual and group therapy, PTSD treatment, MST counseling, substance abuse referrals, employment assistance, and bereavement counseling — all in a non-clinical, community setting. Combat veterans can access Vet Center services regardless of VA enrollment status.

HUD-VASH — Start Here If You Are HomelessThe HUD-VA Supportive Housing program combines VA healthcare with HUD housing vouchers for veterans experiencing homelessness. Contact any Alabama VA Medical Center directly and ask specifically about HUD-VASH to get started. You do not need a VA disability rating to qualify.
Never Pay to File a VA ClaimAccredited VSO representatives, ADVA county service officers, American Legion, DAV, and VFW service officers all help veterans file and appeal VA claims at no cost. If anyone asks for money upfront to file a claim, walk away — it may be a scam.
